Obituary for Vincenta Gage

FARMINGTON- Vincenta C. Gage, 89, of Strong, passed away peacefully, Saturday, September 27th at Franklin Memorial Hospital. Vincenta or “Vinnie” was born in Boston on August 6, 1925, a daughter of George and Anna (Bonanno) Cannariato. Vincenta graduated from Boston University in 1946 at the age of 20 where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in English. Following commencement, she moved to Strong, Maine where she accepted a teaching position. On July 16th, 1950, she married the love of her life, Robert Gage. Vincenta later taught in Phillips from 1955 to 1969 until the district consolidation of SAD58 took place and Mt. Abram High School was established. During her time at Mt. Abram, Vincenta taught Senior English and happily took on the role of the school Librarian. In 1971 she earned her Master’s degree in English from the University of Maine at Farmington with a background in Library Science and eventually became the full time Librarian at the school. In 1991, the school district dedicated the Mt. Abram High School Library to her, designating it as the Vincenta C. Gage Library. Vincenta had an immeasurable passion for teaching, and naturally, reading. She enjoyed spreading her love of literature to all and always had several books in line to read. She was fiercely independent, curious, and a world–traveled woman. She toured numerous countries including China, Russia, Italy and Australia just to name a few. Vincenta helped shape the lives of multiple generations and her legacy of traditional values will continue to live on through her family and her students. Vincenta is survived by her daughter, Ann Marie Conant and her husband John of Tyngsborough, MA; a grandson, Matthew Conant of Hudson, NH; a sister, Marie Grassey of Holliston, MA; a brother-in-law, Frederick Gage and his wife Carolyn of Auburn; many nieces and nephews; and the compassionate caregivers whose dedication allowed her to remain in her beloved home in Strong for many years.
