FARMINGTON-Thomas Garvin, 85, of Strong, formerly of Dunstable, MA and Alfred, ME, died early Wednesday morning, Mar. 30, 2011, at the Sandy River Center for Healthcare in Farmington. He was born on Nov. 12, 1925, in Portland, a son of Lester and Lillian (Rankin) Garvin. He graduated Valedictorian of the Alfred High School Class of 1942 and went on to the University of Maine at Orono. Tom enlisted in the US Army in 1944 and trained at Fort Riley in Kansas with the Horse Cavalry. He served in China, Burma and India and once went on a 400-mile march through the jungle of Burma with the Mars Task force leading pack mules. On June 29, 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Jean Cleavers of Alfred. In 1955 they made their home in Dunstable, MA where he worked at a textile mill in Lowell as a Superintendant Dryer of custom fabrics and furniture material. He loved all animals and owned many cats, dogs and horses throughout his life. He also enjoyed cooking, crossword puzzles, and sports, especially the New York Yankees. He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Jean Garvin of Strong; a daughter, Deborah Garvin of Strong; three grandchildren, Samantha Reynolds of Strong, Jennifer Harmon of Louisiana and Jason Paquin of Pelham, NH; four great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Pamela Garvin; a sister, Isabelle Maasen; three brothers, Paul, Eugene and Richard Garvin; a beloved grandson, David Reynolds. Arrangements are in the care of the Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service & Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Rd., Farmington, ME.
