PORTLAND -- Albert L. Smith, 70, of East Wilton died Wednesday evening, July 2, 2014, at Maine Medical Center, Portland, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer. He as born May 13, 1944 in Lewiston, a son of Murray L. and Mary Clara (Parker) Smith. He was a 1962 graduate of Wilton Academy and continued his education at Huson College in Bangor where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and minored in Business Administration. He later graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in April of 1972. On Sept. 13, 1974, he married Shannon Chase of Wlton. He was proud of being a "local boy" who enjoyed farm life and lived his entire lifetime in East Wilton. He began his law enforcement career in Wilton in 1973, an interest spurred on by a "ridealong" with his eldest brother, the late Sheridan Smith, then a Farmington Police officer. He worked his way up through the ranks as a patrol deputy, corporal, transport officer and transport supervisor and retired after 38 years of service o April 30, 2013. To date, he was the longest working employee for the FCSD. In addditio to his law enforcement career, he enjoyed working the family farm and beginning in 1960, was self-employed as an ower-trainer-driver; he oversaw a stable of 15 race horses. He was a 50-year member of the Maine Harness Horsemen Association, the Farmington Harness Horsemen Association and the United States Trotting Association; for 16 years he was a member of the IAABO#20 and refereed throughout the State. He was a Charter and Life Time Member of the Farmington Elks BPOE#2430 and for several years served as a Wilton Youth League Baseball Coach and Director. He akso served on the Mt. Blue All Sports Boosters Club. His love of working for and serving the general public is only surpassed by his love of family. Racing with daughter Amylynn, attending athletic sporting events of his son JR and daughter Amylynn, hunting with his son or camping with his grandchildren, attending their games or simply sharing a popsicle with his littlest grandson, Corbin, were all valued and precious moments, particularly when so much of his time was also centered on caring for the needs of others outside of his family circle. He will be remembered for his kind and generous spirit....forever the "horse whisperer". Albert is survived by his devoted wife and best friend, Shannon, of East Wilton; their son, Albert Smith, Jr., "JR", and his wife, Jaynelle of Winthrop; their daughter, Amylynn Bibeau and her husband, Randall "Randy" of Livermore; one sister, Gloria Cushing of East Wilton; one brother, Stanley Smith and his wife, Helen of Kennisaw, Georgia: five grandchildren: Shie and Jevin Smith of Wintrhop; Beth Bubier and her husband, Chris of Jay; Hunter and Corbin Bibeau of Livermore; brothers-in-law, Clifford Chase, Jr. and his wife, Gayle of Dryden and Dwain Chase of Wilton; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Welch of Wilton and Montris Tyler and her husband, Calvin of Jay; many nieces, nephews and cousins and "surrogate children" Steven Smith and Kathi Smith. He was predeceased by a brother, Sheridan Smith and brother-in-laws, Rick Cushing and Lauris Welch.
