Obituary for Katherine Riddle
Belgrade – Katherine was a daughter, sister, friend, nurse, wife, mother, and so much more. Kathy passed away Saturday, March 4, 2023 with her husband of 48 years, David right by her side, after battling the degenerative brain disease, dementia. She was fiercely devoted to the outdoors and loved spending time in Rangeley as a summer kid where her family spent their summers there running the summer camp Waya-Awi. Rangeley was also where she met the love of her life, David, whom she married June 15, 1974.
She loved being a nurse and was on the IV team at Augusta General Hospital and then moved to the Belgrade Health Center in Belgrade Lakes where she worked for many years. She was very devoted to her many patients and became friends with them as well as being their caregiver. She completed her Community Health Education Specialist (CHES) and in 1998, joined SAD 47/RSU 18 as a school nurse before she retired in 2014.
Kathy was known as Skat by her parents, and it was on her license plate as well. She was fiercely loyal to all that she loved and those that knew her. She was known as “Nursie” to her students whom she cared for as if they were her own. She enjoyed reading books, camping, and horseback riding. She loved to travel and going on trips with Uncle “Doc” as well as shopping for clothes and jewelry.
She is survived by her husband, David of Belgrade; son, David O. and his wife, Sarah and grandchildren, Owen and Einin, all of Sydney; and a son, Dwight of Belgrade; brother, Warren Gladwin and his wife, Clydene of Sarahland, AL; numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Marquita and Homer Gladwin; and a sister, Laura Hazard.
Public graveside memorial services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Rangeley in the late spring or early summer with Father Thomas Rock, officiating, and will be announced. The family suggests that those who desire consider memorial gifts in her memory to their local animal shelter or to the Alzheimer’s Association of Maine, 383 US-1 #2C, Scarborough, ME 04074.
