Obituary for Horace "Hoddy" Greaton

JAY- Horace Wilson Greaton
September 15, 1979 – November 28, 2022

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Horace W. Greaton, also known as Hoddy to many of his friends and family, has gone to reunite with his father on a riverbank fishing together once again. Only this time they’re catching the big ones within the beauty of heaven’s kingdom. At the young age of 43, after being stricken by Covid and suffering a stroke at his home in Jay. Horace took his first ever helicopter ride to Maine Medical Center, a place that had saved his life so many times before, and one where he spent much of his childhood being not just a fighter but a warrior against Cancer.
Horace entered the world 86 days early on Saturday September 15, 1979, weighing just over a pound. Becoming the son of Sharon Greaton and Robert Haynes.

At the age of three he was diagnosed with Glioblastoma a form of brain cancer and given just five short years to live. Horace beat those odds, and being the warrior, he was against cancer at the age of thirteen when he fell into a coma struck once again by the deadly disease. It was said he would never wake up. Once again, he defied the doctor’s prognosis, he would always joke that he woke up because of the promise his sister made of being able to drive her four-wheeler.

Horace spent his childhood years growing up in Leeds, on an old country dirt road. Where he would ride his battery power dune buggy up and down the road visiting with the neighbors. Often following behind him would be his dog Coco. Horace had a love for anything with a motor but his most desired procession as a teen was to have a Subaru Brat. He was successful in accomplishing this feat by trading his baby sister’s four-wheeler one day while she was away for his Subaru. His baby sister learned from that day forward to never break a promise to her big brother!

Horace attended Leeds Central school, Trip Middle School and graduated from Leavitt Area High School as the class of 2000. During his school years he enjoy participation in the Special Olympics and received many ribbons and medals. He held his first job in high school working at Morgan Service Station, pumping gas. Throughout his school hood years, he enjoyed spending his classroom time with his near and dear friend Chris “sparky” Sparks.

Horace enjoyed fishing and hunting with his father. Playing bingo with his mother. He liked passing time with his niece playing online games and cards. He had a love of collecting lawn mowers and their parts so that he could ticker with them till they ran again. He enjoyed helping his family and friends with anything they needed. His gentle soul and kind heart saw only the good in people, always greeting anyone with a smile and a joke.

Horace spent his adulthood living in Jay sharing a home with his mother and niece. Raising his niece like she was his own child. Horace, also, took great pride and sacrifice with taking caring of his mother in her elder years; the same as she had once cared for him. She was his best friend, and he was her pride and joy.
Horace’s life will be celebrated on Saturday December 10th. Which is the day he was to be born had he not come 86 days early into this world.

Horace is survived by his mother Sharon Oliver of Jay, his half-brother William Greaton of Missouri, his sister Rebecca Hinkley of Leeds, brother-in-law Ronald Hinkley of North Monmouth. Half-sisters Lisa Haynes, Peggy Haynes and Brenda Fonk. He is also survived by his niece he raised as his own Alesha Greaton of Jay. Along with his niece Emily Hinkley of Randolph whom he adored and called LiL Red, his nephew Ronald Hinkley of North Monmouth that he loved visits from so he could get him laughing and put him to work with him. As well as a special adopted niece Hannah Gauthier of Leeds. One great niece Qetsiyah Malinowski and her mother Annmarie of Waterville. Horace is survived by many, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins as well.

Waiting for Horace on the other side to greet him, are his father Robert Haynes, his grandparents and a friend from childhood who was much like another sister, Catherine Capen Gauthier.
