Obituary for Frances Houghton (Hutchinson)

AUBURN - Frances Mae (Hutchinson) Houghton, 82, passed comfortably at the Androscoggin Hospice House on January 18, 2024, with family at her bedside.

Frances was born to Frank and Flora (Swan) Hutchinson on November 4th, 1941 in Carthage, Maine. Frances was the middle child of fifteen. She married Charles Houghton, also of Carthage, in 1963, making a home and busy life until his passing in 2013. Charles and Frances remained in Carthage throughout their lives raising five children: Melanie “Mel” (Harvey), Melinda “Sister” (Quirion), Charles Jr. “Scooter”, Linwood “Lonnie”, and Clifton “Kippy”. She was a doting mother who took pride in small victories like making sure her children had the whitest diapers or baking perfect biscuits.

In addition to raising children and making a home, Frances also worked at the Bass Shoe production plant in Wilton for many years. At 60 years young, she earned her CNA Certification and with her boundless energy and love of caring for others, was a natural home health caregiver. She found pleasure in river swims, crocheting, dancing, collecting berries for her baking, gardening, and doing crossword puzzles. In her later years, Frances found a dancing and sightseeing partner in Doug Desroches. Doug and Frances traveled the countryside enjoying each other’s company and sharing their lives. Their mutual love for collecting and processing firewood kept them strong. Frances introduced her beloved cats Lily and Noah, and her dog Cece to Doug and they welcomed him as their own.

Frances’ limitless love was shared as her family grew through marriages and births. She welcomed and loved her daughters-in-law Lori (Robbins), Jill (Stoutamyer), and Amanda (Knopka); her sons-in-law Bob Harvey, Spencer Quirion, and Mark Pagurko. Frances found no more joy in life than the joy of spending time with her grandchildren: Leya and Ragyn Harvey, Mathew and Macy Pagurko, Myles Quirion, Vrushali (Chavan) Pagurko, Charles III, Ivy, and Nolan Houghton, Cole Houghton and Cady (Houghton) Michaelsen, Mads Michaelsen, Cody and Mackenzie Houghton. Frances was also overjoyed to have two great grandchildren Myra and Ari Pagurko (Mathew & Vrushali’s children).

Frances’ entire family and list of friends is too extensive to include. Her children wish them all to know that her heart held a place for each of them. The family will share plans for a remembrance event to be scheduled for a future date. If you wish to learn of these plans, please send an email to FrancesMH1941@gmail.com and include a brief description of your relationship to Frances or contact one of her children.

Family and friends are invited to share special memories, reflections, or words of sympathy in Frances’ Book of Memories at www.wilesrc.com. Cremation care provided by Wiles Remembrance Center of Farmington.
