Obituary for Ellen Roth
Ellen Marie Sullivan Roth, 83, passed away at Avita Memory Care Center, Westbrook, Maine after a long illness on Monday, September 25 2023.
Ellen was born February 10, 1940 in Yonkers, New York to Joseph and Elizabeth Sullivan. She was the eldest of four siblings, Mary Beth, Katherine, and Joseph Sullivan. She attended Sacred Heart school in Yonkers.
Ellen is survived by many family and friends, many that she remained close to through her whole life. Her close group of friends from summers at the Jersey Shore would meet up every few years to reconnect.
Ellen Sullivan married John “Jack” Roth after meeting him at the Jersey Shore where they both were renting summer houses with friends. Ellen and Jack married May 8, 1965. They began their married life in New Jersey before deciding to leave the city for rural Vermont.
Ellen attended Saint Peter’s in Yonkers and Sacred Heart High School. She began her career after graduation working for IBM in Manhattan. Upon moving to Vermont, Ellen switched to a career as a librarian, a well-suited job she would continue to work well into her 70’s. As a social democrat, Ellen unionized her fellow librarians at the age of 65. She was an active member of the Barre Town Democrats.
After Jack’s retirement, Ellen continued her career-long love of books working at the Wilton Free Library.
Ellen was a voracious reader her whole life, being surrounded by books was her happy place. She was also active in church groups in both Barre, Vermont and Farmington, Maine. She attended Saint Monica’s Catholic Church in Barre, Vermont for much of her life, later on attending Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Farmington where she was a member of the church altar guild.
She was predeceased by sisters Katherine Egan of Latham, NY and sister Mary Beth Sullivan of Bomoseen, Vermont, and niece Eileen Sullivan of Albany, NY. She is survived by her brother, Joseph and Janet Sullivan and their family; her three children, Nancy Thomas and husband Robert Thomas of Kingfield, Maine, son Kevin Roth and wife Bonni Roth of Warrensburg, NY, and daughter Mary Jo Roth and husband Matthew Barnes of Peaks Island, Maine; Grandchildren Holly Thomas of Tucson, AZ, Seth Thomas of Rapid City, SD., Abby Roth of Warrensburg, NY, Kerrigan Roth of Albany, NY, John Barnes of Peaks Island, ME, and Nora Barnes of Peaks Island, ME., several nephews and a niece as well as a few cousins.
A Memorial Mass will be held from Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, Middle Street, Farmington, Maine on October 13, 2023 at 1 pm. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Wilton. Memories can be shared in her Book of Memories at www.wilesrc.com. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donation be considered to the Wilson Free Library or Aldrich Public Library.
