Obituary for Donald Newcomb

Farmington - One of the kindest and gentlest guys anyone could ever know, Donald William Newcomb, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2023, at the age of 85 at Sandy River Nursing Home in Farmington. He was born in Livermore Falls, the second of twins to Richard and Leona (Chabot) Newcomb on March 11, 1938, and as he liked to tell, in the front parlor of the family home on Searles Street.

His early education was at St. Rose School in Chisholm and then onto Livermore Falls High School, graduating in the Class of 1955. A somewhat “professional student” he later went onto to study at the University of Maine at Orono, Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona and later at Southern Connecticut College in New Haven. His work and a passion for travel took him across the United States and to many destinations throughout the world.

He lived in New York City and Connecticut for much of his adult life, returning home to Maine in the 1990s. He was proofreader at McGraw-Hill for many years but the pride of his employment was teaching the intellectually-challenged in New Haven. He was especially proud of one student in particular, Andre Lavertu, who had become a somewhat well-known artist in the states and throughout Europe through Don’s guidance and promotion of exhibits.

The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by his parents and 5 brothers, Clarence, Earl, George “Bud”, Charles Harold “Lin”, and twin, Ronald; nieces, Diane and Rosemary and nephews, Michael, John and Kirk. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, (Earl) Mae, Richard and Teri; (George) George, Jeff, Jimmy, Ann Marie, Laurie and Peggy; (Charles) David, Debbie and Nancy; (Ronald) Bruce, Dana, and Jane; many great and great-great nieces and nephews and several godchildren. He will be very sadly missed by an extended group of very dear friends.

If desired, donations in Don’s memory can be made to Franklin County Animal Shelter at 550 Industry Road, Farmington, Maine 04938 or to the Alzheimer’s Association of Maine, 383 US-1 #2c, Scarborough, Maine 04074.

Memories can be shared in his Book of Memories at www.wilesrc.com. Cremation care has been provided by Wiles Remembrance Centers of Jay and Farmington.
